Seedgro

Empowering smallholder farmers to make informed decisions that improve their yields
2023 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Sustainable Agriculture Malawi

Seedgro is an agricultural technology enterprise that provides real-time agricultural advisory support services to smallholder farmers in remote areas of Malawi. The business also facilitates market linkages to reduce post-harvest waste and increase farmers’ incomes.

Seedgro’s innovative solution utilises IoT, cloud, SMS, voice-over, and USSD technologies to gather data from soil sensors planted in the fields. This data is processed in the cloud and accessible to farmers, helping them make informed agricultural decisions.

The business makes revenue direct sales from soil sensors, certified seeds, and through commissions paid by farmers linked to market opportunities.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

By making informed decisions about soil management and crop strategies using Seedgro’s support system, farmers can improve their yields and adapt to climate change effects. Seedgro trains and partners with smallholder farmers to use and adopt smart farming techniques. The company is increasing 275 farmer’s land productivity by 35% and linking them to markets, helping improve their profit margins by 55% (2023).

The enterprise is reducing food insecurity by 20% in 67 households (2023) while creating a database of agricultural land using sensors and drone technology and producing climate-resilient and adaptable certified legume seeds.
