Ecohub (Pty) Ltd

A new way of construction, combining recycling and architecture
2021 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Waste Management Gaborone, Botswana

Established in 2017, Ecohub (Pty) Ltd is a startup that uses one problem (plastic waste) as a solution to solving another problem (homelessness). The company provides eco-friendly affordable housing that also empowers the low-income community through a recycling incentive rewards programme.

The eco-bricks are non-load bearing, flat-packed, strong, fire resistant and versatile. The eco-bricks interlock with no need for adhesives and stack up braced with structural framing to give structural stability and definition. Therefore, the eco houses are easily assembled on site in 1-5 days.

Eco-inclusive Impacts

Eco houses made from recycled eco-bricks provide low-income earners with an affordable, climate-resilient housing solution that endures climate-induced extreme weather events such as floods or heat waves.
  • Providing a home for at least 8 out 10 homeless people, thus improving living conditions and providing a basic need for underserved communities
  • Incentivising and empowering people in the plastic waste recycling supply chain

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by recycling plastic
  • Saving an average of 2.5kg of CO2 per kg of plastic waste used
  • Providing climate resilient housing model that endures heatwaves, floods, and unpredictable weather
  • Earth regeneration through 1 tree planted with every ecohouse sold
  • Introducing “waste for bricks exchange” and later cash redeemable or grocery shopping points for waste collector as additional income
  • Empowering local economy by providing sustainable employment opportunities in both recycling, manufacturing and assembly of the ecohouse

This enterprise is supported through its partnerships with various stakeholders, ranging from national and international organisations, investors, research institutes, suppliers, governmental bodies, NGOs, other social and environmental enterprises and more.

Botswana Innovation Hub has provided funding for the launch of the enterprise. It has incubated, mentored and guided Ecohub until commercialisation.

Gaborone City Council will assist with plastic waste collection, waste management strategies and implementation as well identifying registered destitutes living in shacks
