The Gambia - 2011 SEED Winner -GreenTech Company Ltd - fuel briquettes from groundnut shells combined with fuel efficient stoves

GreenTech’s determination to provide innovative and affordable environmental solutions to The Gambia and beyond is what inspired the SEED Jury to award them a 2011 SEED Award. "GreenTech Company Ltd" markets briquettes made from groundnut shells in combination with fuel efficient stoves. Waste groundnut shells are transformed into affordable fuel briquettes which are distributed with fuel-efficient stoves produced by local welders. The new cooking stove system is piloted by partner restaurants and school kitchens and promoted through women’s networks.

Following the SEED Award, GreenTech was approached by diverse institutions to present and demonstrate products, services and concepts at national and international levels through workshops, seminars and fairs. These events expanded their network and allowed for experience exchange at an international level. GreenTech also gained recognition from local authorities and communities, and drawing on the lessons they learned on partnership management during the SEED Support, they were able to develop and formalise new partnerships.

The establishment of decentralised and independent sales points and the demonstration and testing in schools is one of the most successful parts of the support plan that GreenTech developed with their SEED advisor. In addition, reenTech developed a focus on opening new market options and spreading awareness about fuel efficient stoves and briquettes.

Targets GreenTech achieved during the SEED Support:

  • conducted workshops, seminars and fairs to demonstrate biomass briquettes and stoves.
  • ran an environmental school poster competition and field trips to GreenTech.
  • provided training in the use of fuel efficient stoves and briquettes to 20 Schools, surrounding community members and 90 key institutions.
  • trained welders and a team of sales women.
  • established 3 independent retailers.
