Dssinline - Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Project

Improving nutrition and reducing poverty through sustainable aquaculture
L'équipe SEED Starter Sustainable Agriculture Kampala, Uganda

Dssinline is an aquaculture project that aims to relieve overfishing pressures on Lake Victoria while farming indigenous fish as a nutritious and affordable source of protein. In addition to strengthening local food systems and improving food security, the enterprise also aims to alleviate poverty and provide sustainable livelihoods to locals through the creation and promotion of green jobs along the aquaculture value chain.

The enterprise utilises cage cultures, which are aquaculture production systems where fish are reared in floating net cages. Fish cages have been placed in Lake Victoria along the coast of a village in the Buikwe district in eastern Uganda. The village suffers from high levels of unemployment, malnutrition and poverty; these are the core problems that Dssinline aims to tackle through sustainable aquaculture.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

  • Sustainable aquaculture techniques are reducing environmental damage and leading to healthier fish populations.
  • Conservation zones are helping fish populations grow at a rate that is 15% faster than normal growth of wild fish.
  • The enterprise's aquaculture activities are contributing to improved food security in the region.
  • Dssinline is providing better, affordable nutrition for locals through its fish and fish products.
  • Increased employment opportunities are reducing poverty levels and promoting skills development.
  • The enterprise is promoting the adoption of innovations for productive and sustainable aquaculture.
