GreenTech Solutions

Affordable and durable building materials from recycled plastic waste
2019 SEED Africa Award Waste Management Mutare, Zimbabwe

GreenTech Solutions manufactures building materials from recycled plastic waste. GTS sources raw materials from informal pickers and community-based organisations, manufactures and distributes finished products, and does advertising and marketing for the products. Due to local plastic waste pollution, another focus of the company is awareness-rising. The enterprise targets local hardware centres, companies, and households to sell plastic tiles, ceilings, gutters, fencing poles, and driveway paving. The products are an eco-friendly alternative to commonly used iron sheets.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

GreenTech Solutions tackles plastic pollution in Zimbabwe by recycling plastic raw materials, increasing cleanliness and reducing environmental damage and health risks. They conduct awareness campaigns and clean-ups in the city of Mutare. This promotes social responsibility and reduces harmful carbon dioxide and GHG emissions. The enterprise has started sourcing 90 kilos of plastic waste each week since the beginning of 2019, providing income to local women who help in sourcing plastic.

  • Conducting clean-ups and awareness campaigns, resulting in a cleaner city
  • Reducing diseases related to improper waste disposal
  • Sourcing 90kgs of plastic waste weekly since January 2019, thereby reducing the pollution of the country and waste in landfills
  • Decreasing carbon emissions created by burning of plastic waste
  • Creating jobs for 4 local waste pickers, 3 of which are women
